First, the order in which the dimensions of the bag are listed is crucial: width, height, and gusset. If a third measurement is included, it indicates the presence of a gusset. Second, the dimensions provided always refer to the outside of the bag. A visual chart may show how to measure a stand-up pouch’s gusseted back, including the bottom, width, and height. However, keep in mind that the listed size of the bag does not directly correspond to the usable space inside.
Third, the design features of the bag can reduce the usable space inside (commonly referred to as fill space). These features include: zippers, seals, tear notches, and hanging holes, are included in the overall dimensions and can reduce the usable space inside. The fillable space refers to the area remaining under the bag once it is sealed or closed.

No Closure
No closures are common with single-use products (like baking mix) where the bag does not need to be resealed, and the entire contents will be used or consumed in one serving.
Press to Close Zipper
The Press to Close Zipper (aka Flange Zipper) is the industry standard closure, used on nearly all resealable pouches. Popular for it’s ease of use and cost effectiveness.
Pull Tab Zipper
The Pull Tab Zipper (aka Dog Bone Zipper) is commonly used on Flat Bottom Bags for coffee, but can be added to Stand Up Pouches as well.
Tin Tie
Tin Ties are a flexible tin closure that seal bags securely by folding and pressing the ends. Most commonly used with side gusset bags for packaging coffee, these work great to ensure freshness and easy resealing.
Hook & Loop Zipper
The Hook and Loop Zipper (aka Powder Proof Zipper) is a unique solution to keep powdered products like flour, sugar, and protein powders securely sealed. The unique design prevents powder from clogging the resealable area, making resealing effortless and reliable. These are not as air-tight as a Press to Close Zipper.
Lip & Tape
Lip and Tape (aka Peel and Seal) are commonly used in the medical field and other applications. Remove the paper liner to reveal the adhesive strip and stick to the opposite side of the bag to seal. These are single use (can not be resealed) and are typically cut open with scissors (no tear notches), making them tamper evident.
