From Farmers Market to Boise’s Own Grocery Chain
Albertsons was founded in Boise in 1939 and is still headquartered here. Its Trailmix competition, run with Trailhead Boise, puts Idaho food startups in front of its buyers.
What’s at stake
The 2022 Trailmix winner took $50,000 and shelf space at the Broadway Avenue Albertsons in Boise.
Who competes
Shelf-stable products: freeze-dried foods, snacks and cured meats from Treasure Valley makers.
What a buyer sees
A printed pouch says you’re ready for a chain. And with no plate fees, adding flavors costs no tooling.
What Boise Food Makers Put in Bags
The Boise metro grew from 468,874 people in 2000 to 864,243 in 2025, about 84% (Census Bureau). More people, more local brands.
Candy
Idaho Candy Company has made candy at 412 South 8th Street since 1909, including the Idaho Spud bar since 1918.
Coffee
Dawson Taylor has roasted in Boise since 1995, and Moxie Java in Garden City since 1988.
Snacks
Idaho Popcorn sells bagged popcorn made with Idaho-grown kernels.
Companies named are examples of what Boise makes, not Hawk customers.
Growing a Treasure Valley Food Brand
Start with stock bags and a label. Switch to printed bags when a retailer says yes and volume reaches 5,000 per design.
Capital City Public Market
Saturdays on The Grove Plaza downtown, April through December. Where Boise brands prove demand.
Licensed kitchen
Central District Health licenses Ada County food businesses: $200, plus a $100 plan review.
Grocery shelf
Printed pouches once a chain like Albertsons takes your product.

What Will Your Bags Cost?
Price per bag depends on style, size, material and colors. Delivery to Boise is included, with no plate fees.
No plate fees matters when a buyer asks for more flavors: a nine-color design runs over $1,300 in cylinders at a converter who bills for them.
What Boise Brands Ask Us
Do you have a location in Boise?
No. We’re a California company in Sunnyvale. We deliver to any Treasure Valley dock with freight in the per-bag price.
We’re pitching at Trailmix. When should we order bags?
Before you need them. Lead time is 8 to 10 weeks from approved artwork, so get samples and a dieline early, and order once shelf space is confirmed.
Are there plate or setup fees?
No. Converters who bill for cylinders commonly charge around $150 per color. Ours is inside the per-bag price, including on revisions.
Where are the bags made?
By our partner plants in Asia. Freight, customs and delivery to your dock are in the price, and the 8 to 10 week lead time includes transit.
